33 ROAD AMERICA – VICTOR GONZÁLEZ MASTERS THE RAIN Three weeks later, the series moved to Road America in Wisconsin, where the changeable weather would play a major part. Race 1 began in heavy drizzle and the rain increased as the race went on. Both the drivers who started on the front row – McCann and Victor González – slid off the track on the opening lap and so it was left to Vincent and Hurczyn to control the race and record a 1-2 finish. Christian Cole took the Cup victory after Putt’s Audi ended up in the barriers on Lap 10. The following day, conditions were far worse. First the start of Race 2 was delayed, then the drivers had to cope with a flooded track when the race got underway. After a tentative first few laps behind the safety car, pole-sitter Hurczyn started to build a lead once the race went green. He slid off the track three laps later, however, and so González inherited a lead he wouldn’t relinquish. Hurczyn dropped to fourth place thanks to the incident and recovered to finish second, but couldn’t prevent the Puerto Rican from taking his second win of the season. In the TCR Cup class, Cole led for much of the race, but was passed by Putt who increased his lead in the class standings after his retirement in Race 1. Both titles will therefore be decided at the final event of TC America, at Las Vegas over the weekend of October 18th-20th. Round 11 – Saturday 31 August, Watkins Glen International 1. M.
