3 SPOTLIGHT Jan Magnussen, arguably the most successful racing driver from Denmark, is the latest big name to enter the TCR fray. Last week, the 46-year old from Roskilde announced his 2020 programme in the newly launched TCR Denmark series with LM Racing. “I have always enjoyed racing on my home tracks in front of all the Danish motorsport fans, and I am so happy to be offered a seat in the inaugural season of TCR Denmark. I have been following the American TCR championship while racing with Corvette in IMSA, and there’s no doubt that the performance of these cars is great. Besides, the cars also fit very well with the short racetracks and exciting street circuits that we have in Denmark. I’m pretty sure that we will create a cool show for both fans and drivers,” said Magnussen. Following three Karting World titles and victory in the Formula Ford Festival, Magnussen’s racing career took off when he dominated the 1994 British Formula 3 Championship, winning a record 14 races out of 18 with Paul Stewart Racing. The year after, he made his maiden Formula 1 appearance replacing Mika Häkkinen at McLaren in the Pacific Grand Prix and between 1996 and 1997 took the start JanMagnussen to race in the inaugural TCR Denmark and 2013 and scored four GT class victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours (2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009). Magnussen also proved to be competitive at the wheel of production-based saloon cars. He became a regular in the Danish Touring Car Championship and Scandinavian Touring Car Cup driving Peugeot, Toyota, BMW and Chevrolet cars between 2001 and 2010, claiming several race wins and being crowned Danish champion in 2003 and 2008. In recent seasons he has returned to endurance competition, securing the title in last year’s IMSA SportsCar Championship. In TCR Denmark Magnussen will drive a Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR for LM Racing and will began testing early next year. “I have not had the opportunity to test a TCR racing car yet, but I have heard a lot of good things about it from different good drivers. I am really looking forward to beginning the testing programme as soon as possible ,” he said. “We are thrilled to have Jan with us. We are an ambitious racing team with high expectations from our partners and sponsors, and Jan’s long experience in racing for some of the most famous teams in the world will be crucial for the top results that we want to deliver. We are aiming for the title! ” says LM Racing team principal Lars Mogensen. in 24 F1 rounds for Stewart Grand Prix. After some appearances in the CART series, he built himself a solid reputation as a successful Sportscar driver, mostly as a member of the Corvette Racing team.
