The Indy Lights series, the American Open-
Wheel championship that aims to develop
the talents of the young single seater
racers, has a long history. It started in
1986 as a developmental series of CART,
before moving under the Indy Racing
League umbrella and - starting from this
season - was acquired by Andersen
Promotions. The American company is
relaunching it with an eye on cost
reduction and with a new racecar, built by
Dallara, that will make its debut in 2015.
The Dallara IL-15 was unveiled in front of
the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's world-
famous Pagoda, and left a powerful
impression straight away. The IL-15
replaces the previous Dallara chassis that
has been used for 13 seasons. And while
project's longevity was extremely
flattering, the need for a new design
became apparent to respond to all the
latest safety requirements.
The new Dallara racecar is equipped with
anti-intrusion side panels and next-
generation side crash-box structures,
assisted by a new positioning for the
radiators needed by the AER 2-litre turbo
engine. In addition to that, there are head
protectors at the side of the cockpit and
an underfloor which was not designed only
for aerodynamic purposes, but also to
prevent dangerous wheel-to-wheel
contacts while the drivers fight in close
