Alvaro Barba si conferma leader

Al termine di un duello a distanza con Sebastian Vettel, Alvaro Barba ha concluso in prima posizione la giornata inaugurale dei test collettivi di Valencia della World Series Renault. Come a Vallelunga, il confronto è stato tra i team Comtec e Carlin e alla fine l'ha spuntata la squadra vincitrice del campionato 2006. Per Vettel, la Comtec sta diventando una specie di "bestia nera" in questi test di fine stagione. Ottimo terzo posto per Giedo Van der Garde, alla migliore prestazione in World Series Renault col team Victory mentre Sergio Jimenez si è confermato tra i primi della classe col team Pons ottenendo il quarto tempo.

Soddisfazione in casa Draco per Marco Barba, quinto, che ha svolto un ottimo lavoro. Il team di Adriano Morini nel pomeriggio ha fatto girare Milos Pavlovic al posto di Diego Nunes. Il pilota serbo ha subito colto l'ottavo tempo. Al termine di una giornata densa, Christian Montanari ha saputo portare la Dallara della GD Racing al decimo posto. Felix Porteiro ha avuto problemi con la schiena, postumi di un recente incidente stradale, e con la Prema non ha potuto coprire i giri preventivati. Passo in avanti di Alex Ciompi della Cram e di Niki Sebastiani con la seconda vettura della GD. Alessandro Bonetti non è riuscito a sfruttare le gomme nuove nel run finale per una uscita di pista alla variante, ma la fiducia tra il pilota trentino e il team KTR è in continuo aumento. Mikhail Aleshin ha provato il push-to-pass nell'ora finale del turno.

The Carlin Motorsport boys set the first impressive times. Both Vettel and Aleshin seemed very consistent. As the Formula One action got back underway in Barcelona, the BMW Sauber F1 test driver didn’t look too worried about missing it: “I’ve spoken with the team and there will be another test in Jerez. To be honest it took me a little bit of time to adapt to the World Series in Vallelunga, since my last experience in Spa and my broken finger. The weather wasn’t very nice but on the second day we were quick. We can do a very good job on this track as well”.
Alvaro Barba was the only driver to register a time below 1.23 (1.22.926) and finished on top with the Comtec Racing Team. A few debutants, mostly from Brazil, made their first outings in a World Series car. Sergio Jimenez put in some impressive laps, finishing the morning session in third place. Giedo Van de Garde completed the top 5 list after the first session. For the afternoon session, Milos Pavlovic drove for Draco, the team he raced for in 2006. The Serbian is considering a third and final year in World Series rather than going to compete in the US, says his manager, Giordano Maggi.
For a long time, the Barba brothers were in command of this session. Alvaro Barba (Comtec) was 0.658 seconds faster than his younger brother, Marco (Draco), and by the end of the session he improved his fastest lap time by almost 1 second. The Dutchman Giedo Van der Garde registered the second fastest lap with 1.22.807, thirty minutes before the chequered flag, while Pavlovic improved on his best time and climbed to eighth.
Renault Sport has already been testing the “Push to Pass” data validation system. Today, the Russian driver Mikhail Aleshin tested the system for one hour. Some GP2 drivers took part in the test. The Spaniard Félix Porteiro still holds the record for the best timed lap in a World Series Formula Renault 3.5 car (1.20.352), but since then, both the track and the car have undergone some modifications. Today he finished in 12th place. The Italian Ferdinando Monfardini will replace him in the Prema car, while he tested with RC today.
