Modifiche alla Chase For The Cup e ai punteggi-gara

La Nascar ha annunciato le tanto attese modifiche al formato della "Chase For The Cup", la serie di playoff che caratterizzerà anche il prossimo anno le ultime dieci gare Nextel Cup. Innanzi tutto il numero dei piloti partecipanti verrà aumentato, portandolo da dieci a dodici unità. In più cambieranno i punteggi di ingresso. Non più piloti distanziati di 5 lunghezze (da 5000 a 5050 punti) ma un totale di 5000 punti, uguale per tutti, al quale verranno sommati dieci punti bonus per ogni vittoria conquistata nelle prime 26 gare. In più al vincitore di ogni corsa verranno assegnati, durante tutto l'arco della stagione, 185 punti, cinque in più che nelle passate edizioni. Da notare che, con il nuovo sistema, il campionato 2006 si sarebbe chiuso comunque con la vittoria di Jimmie Johnson, il quale però avrebbe conquistato il titolo 2004 al posto di Kurt Busch.

The long-awaited adjustment tho the Chase For The Cup format and to the point system has been unveiled by Nascar. The last ten races will be the scenery of the title fight, but two more drivers will be added to the game. The top 12 will be given a starting ranking based on the number of their wins in the regular season. Drivers will be awarded 5000 points, plus 10 points for each win in the first 26 rounds. In addition to the new Chase, a 5 point bonus will be given to the winner of each round, moving the total from 180 to 185. Considering the two current 5-point bonuses, the maximum possible total per race will be now of 195 points.
Is to note that with the new format, Jimmie Johnson would have been confirmed as Nextel Cup Champion, in front of Tony Stewart, but in 2004 the five-point bonus would have played a much more important factor. The number 48 driver would have won his first championship in just his third complete season.
