Daytona fine test, Busch soddisfatto della COT

L'ultima giornata dei test pre-stagione a Daytona ha finalmente visto in scena una Car of Tomorrow direttamente comparata alle altre vetture. Con il restrittore più favorevole che si prevede di usare sui nuovi modelli in futuro, Kurt Busch ha fatto segnare un tempo di oltre un secondo e mezzo più veloce rispetto a quello di Jeff Gordon, con la prima delle Nextel Cup “vecchia maniera”. La media sul giro è stata di olte 191 miglia orarie, mentre una volta montato il restrittore standard, le prestazioni si sono normalizzate verso il basso. Dietro a Gordon si sono piazzati Stremme, Gilliland, e Montoya, mentre è stato Paul Menard a far segnare il miglior crono nella sessione collettiva del pomeriggio (48”103). In casa Toyota il team di Michael Waltrip si è confermato sufficientemente competitivo, reclamando il titolo di squadra di punta nella formazione giapponese. In casa Red Bull solo piccoli miglioramenti, in particolare durante i run solitari. Buone prove per il “nonno” Ken Schrader, oltre che per Regan Smith, pilota che condividerà la Chevy numero 01 con Mark Martin.

The final day of Daytona's Preseason Thunder eventually showed a Car Of Tomorrow directly compared with regular Nextel Cup Cars. Kurt Busch topped the chart in the morning session, thanks to the smaller restrictor that is expected to be used by new models. The best lap turned in the Dodge Avenger showed an average speed of 191.188 mph, more than 1.5 seconds faster than Jeff Gordon one. As Busch seemed really satisfied, David Stremme took third place, in front of David Gilliland and Juan Pablo Montoya. Michael Waltrip Racing, that appears to present itself as the top Toyota team, continued to show a pretty decent pace, as Red Bull made some improvements, especially when running alone. Paul Menard set the fastest time in the whole two-week testing during afternoon's session. Kyle Busch took second place, followed by good ol' Ken Schrader. Regan Smith, Mark Martin's car-mate, closed in fourth position.
